Lincoln xmas market cancelled today due to (no) snow !!

We've had no snow apart from a slight flurry a couple of hours ago but in their infinite wisdom the authorities have cancelled today's market. I really do feel sorry for all the stallholders who gear themselves up well in advance to attend and pay an awful lot of money to be there.


"Simon Walters, Strategic Director for Communities and Environment at City of Lincoln Council, said:

After much consideration, and with great regret, we have had to make the sad decision to cancel the final day of this year’s Lincoln Christmas Market.

This follows strong advice from partner agencies concerned about tomorrow’s weather forecast and its potential impact.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for the city and county and are also predicting 10cm of snow to fall.

Given that many people travel to the Market from all over the UK, we must make this difficult decision to ensure our visitors stay safe.

The three days of Lincoln Christmas Market this year have been fantastic, with around 180,000 visitors who, once again, have given us some fantastic feedback.

We would like to thank all of those visitors, along with residents, stallholders and all our staff for the great support everyone has given this year."

Ridiculous Most Xmas markets in the Tyrol and Northern Italy e.g. Bolzano sometimes experience snow and almost always freezing conditions and I don't believe it is deemed necessary to cancel them. I also recall a news item a few days ago where Children in Siberia were going to school in -50 temperatures. A couple of snow flakes in the UK and the whole place seems to come to a standstill. Even here in Italy where we become acclimatised to high summer temperatures people wrap up and get on with it even when temperatures plummet (e.g. -7.5C last night on our garden thermometer)

Just been up Steep Hill and absolutely fine. Lincoln very quiet. We have a friend who has a studio on Steep Hill and apparently everyone is up in arms atvth decision.

I find it incredible that the UK is unable to logistically and mentally cope with mild adversity. I spent a long weekend in Salzburg and had a fantastic time. It was bitterly cold and had a decent amount of snow. Places were gritted, roads, rail and runways were clear, no big deal at all. Everyone was dressed for the weather and had no issue standing outside drinking gluhwein etc galore

It wasn't til we arrived at the airport yesterday that we started to hear of possible transport issues in the uk. One woman was flying to heathrow and had been delayed by over a day. We flew into Gatwick and were 15 minutes late but aside from that, all was well.

I've been to the arctic circle and landed practically on a sheet of ice with the ground temperature -16 degrees. Why we cant cope here with a tiny bit of snow, it's just beyond me.

By the way, i'd certainly recommend Salzburg for a winter city break. Far less crowded than the german markets (even moreso if you avoid a Saturday). I preferred Innsbruck last year, but it's certainly got markets galore, old buildings, local traditions and plenty of things to have a look at. It's got a bigger share of tourists because of its links with Mozart and the Sound of Music however, but it's still much quieter than its german counterparts.
