I've tried Tasker's photographic books (Barnsley Streets) and asked in various places but no luck so far. Someone on here might know the place I am looking for. I am trying to find out the name of a cafe/coffee bar/milk bar that I used to visit in the 1960s. It was on the side of Midland Street where Eldon Arcade comes out. If you turned towards the market from the Arcade I believe it was the last building in that row - more or less where that aquatics shop is now. I have searched all the photo books and clicked on the search engine in Tasker's website with no result. It is NOT the Minerva Cafe - that was across the road with access from Midland Street and the Bus Station. If anyone knows the name of this business, or even has a photo they could post, it would be great. It's just something I thought of a few weeks ago when reading a book that mentioned a similar place in a fictitious South Yorkshire town called Thurmarsh and I can't get it out of my head now. I need the NAME!
My mam says it was the Acropolis when we used to go in it. I was always disappointed cos I liked the milky frothy coffee in the Minerva.
Not sure about that. There WAS an Acropolis cafe but I remembered that one being close to the Odeon cinema on Eldon Street.
Yes, I've heard that name before but I don't think it was called Cousins in the 1960s. I may be wrong though
This link suggests that you are right but I don't remember it being called that when I used to go in. http://www.wearebarnsley.com/mobile/photos/photo/15/11047/midland-street/1 It is a long time ago though but I thought it had a more exotic name than that!
Yes I remember that one but what I am looking for is one on Midland street across the road from the bus station, early to mid-1960s
I know which one you mean, I'm digging up names from my past to jog my memory. I remembered Raynors but wasn't sure where it was until reminded. It might just come to me if I stop trying.
