Agree. Regardless of who's to blame we are now a player short, although I have said on other threads, in this particular instance I am not overly bothered. My main issue with loans is that Premiership clubs stock pile young players and then loan them out to clubs like us to decide if they are any good. The risk is ours and we get no long term benefit. Look at Ugbo - if he scores ten goals before Christmas Chelsea will sell him - and it won't be to us. The only we way we could sign him is if he's crap.
I thought that at first but then realised that whether he was a loan signing or a permanent signing the same thing could have happened. What it does highlight to me is the folly of leaving things to the last minute but we are far from the only club doing that
I agree that we and many other clubs have become too reliant on loan players Feel sorry for Mcburnie who clearly wanted to get regular football but at the end of the day we were improving a player for somebody else. As far as I can see this gives more chance to our permanent. players. We still have 4 that can compete for the forward spots without looking at the youth players.
I think the Drinkwater and Morsy loans were more of a warning sign than the McBurnie issue. With Danny, Leicester came in for him just as the window was about to close and although he was notionally a Barnsley player until the end of the season they had the money to prise him away from Manchester United on a permanent deal. The Morsy loan was more complex than that in so much as by triggering the buy-out clause we cancelled the loan and Wigan decided to offer him a revised contract that was more amenable to him than the offer from us.
Fair point though if we hadn't been thinking of loaning McBurnie we could perhaps have tied up a deal for a permanent forward weeks ago.
It makes absolutely no difference if it's a permanent signing or a loan one, as Leicester and Derby demonstrate. We'd likely still be in League One without loan players.
PH in his interview said he had a squad of 22 but would have been happy working with less...he now finds that is the case, however i dont think he had this situation in mind when he said it. becareful what you wish for......bloke next door once wished for his tallywacker to touch the floor......lost both legs the following day he did the loss of this loan gives the perfect opportunity for one of our own to step up and stake a regular claim on the shirt.
IMO EFL transfer window for loans should be extended by a week. Give premier league teams time to finalise their squads and then loan out youngsters who are surplus to requirements and in need of game time. Be interesting how next summers change in the premier league transfer window effects EFL teams. Although next summer I expect us to be in the premier league thanks to Thiam's 35 goal tally
Good strikers are at a premium. We can't afford the stupid money proven strikers at championship level cost. That leaves loans or gambles from lower leagues or overseas. There are those who don't want players from lower leagues. Nor do they want loans. I'm not sure what the answer is therefore. I'd rather invest in promising players from lower leagues but some loans are inevitable I'm afraid given the ridiculous state the bigger clubs have left the game in.
Josh Morris I'd have had him in a heartbeat. Like Thiam primarily an attacking player rather than an old fashioned forward. But then I like a lower league gamble.
To be fair even if you look back into the mists of time all our strikers have been gambles of one sort or another. Currie, Geddis, Rammell etc. Can remember very few instances where we've gone out and bought a ready made striker.
