No need to say anymore.... These are the people that some hold on to there ever word . The OP is right about idiots,...
I'm no fan of training up players for other teams. Very rarely are they successful. We use the system it is what it is but I feel zero excitement about it. The relationship between a fan and their team is a complex one but on some levels you have to bond with the players and feel some sort of affinity. We again have half a team that there is no point feeling any affinity with as they are not our players.
Tammy Abraham kept Bristol city up last year on loan. This year he's at Swansea, and may well keep them up in the premier league with bony. We have Ugbo and mcburnie, with our own forwards thiam and Bradshaw. Seems perfectly fine a setup to me. We've got a couple of central midfield players on loan, one excellent prospect and one a slightly more experienced head. We've also got a decent looking winger on loan from the premier league. Isgrove and Hammill initially came to us on loan from premier league clubs, Ryan Kent did last year. Sometimes we end up building a lasting relationship and get them cheap permanently; Hammill and isgrove, sometimes selling them on for decent profit, Hammill, only for them to return 'home' to Barnsley a few years later when it didn't work out. Sometimes, i.e. Kent, the loan works and impresses his gaffer at the big club, he plays for them in preseason, and gets a loan to somewhere higher in the food chain like the bundesliga to progress more. It works both ways. The clubs have their player developed by them playing first team games against proper misters rather than kids games, plus training with first team squad players daily. We benefit just as much; we get a good player on the cheap - we haven't paid a transfer fee (I don't think we ever even pay a loan fee) and often pay only a fraction of their wages depending on the club. We were always going to get five in on loan. We've also signed over a dozen players on permanent deals. Well done BFC I say.
It's a weird one. Fine we don't own the players, but they still play for us and offer quality that we sometimes need. As for having no affinity to loanees, I doubt there were many fans who came out of Saturday's game thinking 'well two goals and two assists from loanees today, so really that doesn't feel like a win', or people who didn't celebrate our first and second goals because they were scored by loanees. Likewise if we lost a game 1-0 to a goal scored by a loanee for the opposition, no one would come out of the game thinking 'well the goal they scored was by a player they don't own, so in my book we didn't lose'. There's no reason not to get behind supporting a loanee as much as a permanent player and I'm sure in reality most fans would. I wasn't jumping for joy at the signings yesterday, but I'm sure they could be very useful additions to the squad. If McBurnie and Ugbo got, say 30 goals between them this season - two players who cost us nothing - even if it is only for a year, what's not to like?
Yep, all on his own. Can't remember Fletcher or Isgrove contributing anything to that second half of the season. Especially not in any playoff finals or anything.
Fletcher scored 5 league goals and Isgrove 0 Hammill, and Winnall alongside Conor were the major contributors. In the play offs it's fair to say that the loanees influenced things.
What's not to like is next summer we find ourselves with the heart of the team ripped out again and have to start fresh again. Don't get me wrong it is what it is but I can't fake any excitement about loaning a kid and and someone who my Villa Supporting mates are glad to see the back of.
Not expecting you to be massively excited but the system allows us to get players of a quality we might not be able to afford otherwise. I don't know how the loan players will do, but let's say for the sake of argument Ugbo scored 20 this season, that would be a massively boost for us, and finding permanent players from lower leagues who score a good number is difficult and certainly as much of a risk if not more. The system's there, so we'd be handicapping ourselves by not using it
I hope McBurnie dosent read this message board - because if he does he's going to think must people in Barnsley are foooking barmy !!!
The loanees didn't just influence the playoffs though did they - it's not just about goals. The fact is that we had a squad with 6 loanees in it and it was that squad which helped us get out of the league - not just Hammill.
As well as Davies, Roberts, Mawson, Williams, Scowen, Watkins plus Conor and Winnall. All had a huge influence
I'd say without Hammill's influence without Conor being Conor and without Winnall's goals we wouldn't have got promoted. The loanees obviously played a part but individually without them we could have still got promoted. How much influence did Michael Smith have or Conor Wilkinson in our success. In L1 we are financially able to get better loanees than most other teams so we have an advantage and we used it well.
As I said it is what it is. What if we played Jacob Brown again for the sake of argument and he scored 20 instead of barely getting a game or experience or development opportunities . It's a tricky balancing act that we have done ok with recently we will have to see how the season unfolds.
I'd say without Fletcher's, Isgrove's, Long's or Brownhill's influence we we wouldn't have got promoted either. I'd rather have everyone on permanent contracts but it's just not realistic and/or a very good strategy for football league clubs. If we're offered a player we thought would improve the team and who we couldn't usually afford for a year then it would be silly not to take that offer.
I think like it or not, the loan system has had to be used this time round to make sure we have enough cover in all positions, bearing in mind the takeover is still in progress. Hopefully with new owners we can take a more long term view & use loans less next season. I have to say Harvey Barnes looks like he could be an incredible addition for this season.
Even if it stops the development of our own players. Would we be better giving experience and development opportunities to Jacob Brown or McBurnie? Not to pick on him I like the look of him
Clearly Hecky doesn't think Brown is ready yet, hence not playing him. Bigger teams are more likely gonna have better youth players. If the youth are good enough they'll get a chance in my opinion.
I know what you're saying and would personally like to have seen Brown get a run. But he's just had surgery so not sure how long he's out. But sure he'll be banging on the door if he keeps developing. The amount of games we're playing it's almost guaranteed a lot of the lads will be knackered, injured, suspended etc so hopefully we'll see them all get game time. Look forward to seeing what Hecky does now he has quite a few options in each position. Be a strange position for a Barnsley manager to have lots of players to try and keep happy!
Do you genuinely think that they will play before the loan players? To an extent it doesn't matter if 'our' players are better or worse we need to develop them because they are ours. Too many last time we were in the Championship never got a run of games or the requisite experience and faded. Not specific to Brown there's also Kay who now sees his path blocked by a couple of loanees.
