LJ splashing out £5.3M on Famara Diedhiou, a striker who scored 8 goals in 31 games in Ligue 1 last season and 23 goals in 40 games in Ligue 2 the season before. Maybe the French market isn't for us, one to look out for on the first day anyway!
It's the cost of a proven goalscorer. Consider that Boro are paying more than that for a striker who's scored single figures in league 1 and one league cup goal for West Ham and I'd say Bristol have a decent deal on their hands.
Speaking of them/Bristol City, I know Norman Hunter was there when they went up to the First division in '76. But I never knew Glyn Riley played there as well in the mid 80's and helped them win the old JPT at Wembley in '86. This isn't important or relevant, I just thought Id mention it.
If I had the choice of some unknown from France who has scored alot it the French 2nd tier and a few in the 1st I think I'd take my chances on fletcher. Not worth 7 million mind but still only 20 and I think he will be a top player in the future.
When we hired GG I expected the French market to be looked into, and maybe some other Euro nations as well because there must be some good ones out there at a good or reasonable price. The thing is, what is good or reasonable these days for a Euro striker who could get 10+ goals for us at this level ?.
I know and Im not saying we haven't looked into it. Didn't Hecky suggest that 1 of the 4 targets is abroad ?. And with our own transfer market being so over priced these days then GG's possible contacts and Euro knowledge could be massive for us.
Like already been said it won't matter to bristol they have a billionaire owner. If we were to spend 5 million on a striker and pay his wages 5million pound players want it would be plain stupid. Glad our owner won't gamble the clubs future for top flight football.
Talking of Glyn Riley, I played in the same team as him at school and Athersley Boys Club. I posted on OTIB (One Team in Bristol) website, and their fans think of him as a legend. Sadly Glyn didn't want to respond despite an OTIB poster knowing him through his family. I must say the Bristol fans were extremely pleasant and the thread ran to 4 pages or more.
you learn something new everyday on here cambs. i didnt know where glyn left us for and when, it might have been after our promotion in '81.
Why won't it matter? It'll only matter if he gets bored, which I doubt he will. The other point that gets missed is we have our own Steve Lansdowne; just not as wealthy.
Project Bristol is bigger than a passing fad for Lansdowne met him a few times actually a good guy, and pretty inspirational. I think he has set up some trusts for PB for when he isn't around.
