Reported in the daily mail citing last year buses windows broken and what happened to families of Barnsley fans as a deterent. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
2 of our 3 visits to the new Wembley and we have had horrible opposition fans to contend with. Makes me appreciate the wonderful atmosphere of the Oxford game
My experience of the day: went on train early doors so out and about drinking in kings cross then wembley suburbs. Saw plenty of aggro, physical and posturing. This was definitely 50/50. Further if there had been as many barnsley 'fans' in that upper tier then there would have been more prolonged violence. Millwall enjoy violence but barnsley are more than happy to return the favour. There was violence against oxford too. Many instances documented on exit from the ground and numerous arrests afterwards outside a pub in the oxford "designated" area. It's a deeply ingrained cultural thing sadly, and we are not immune from it. Remember the rabid vitriol of the leeds game, before during and after, particularly outside the train station.
No was smack across from it but know a few who were there. If i remember rightly the millwall fan response (on forum) was that barnsley were 'posturing and mouthing'. As we know every argument is partial one way or the other. Did you stand and fight for self preservation or did you run off?
Neither. What would you have done? Plenty of women kids running though. From Millwall lovely people who had to walk the entire circumference of the ground to get the trouble spot.
This is the key thing for me, and it's something I came across whilst reading their comments on facebook. They seem to think that posturing, mouthing, and similar stuff that's standard at football matches, is a green light for them to wade in and not be responsible for their actions. Some of their lot ran from some distance to get involved in the aggro. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Yes but the point is is that many from barnsley would have done the same if it was the other way round. I had a look at a few leeds forums after our home game to gauge their views on it. One post (think it was on the MOT forum) stated he had parked his car in the courthouse car park and walked to the ground 30 mins before kick-off. He said he had not witnessed as much violence and hostility whist watching leeds away over the last 20 years: many of his comrades concurred. Further a couple of months ago a video of barnsley v liverpool in the prem was shared by a liverpool supporters group on social media. There were around 200 responses, nearly all stating "how did we get out of that alive", "what had we ever done to barnsley to deserve that", "scariest walk back to station ever" and " was a great rehearsal for our away match at old trafford the week after". Yep, little old barnsley can be a menacing place too. The problem lies with football and the psychology of many (too many) of it's fans.
No offence, but that is a load of ******. When have Barnsley fans ever "waded in" while getting gestures from the opposition fans? Certainly not on any away day I've been on. I must've missed that.
I find the idea ridiculous that some aren't going to Wembley because of something that probably won't happen.
I'm not disputing any of that, but read the same leeds forum, and they did comment about their own fans being involved in the ugly atmosphere on the way to the ground. I've been to Elland Road when we've been kept in for ages for our own safety, and the Liverpool fans are no angels either. Some shocking stories of our visit when a reds fan was carved up with a Stanley knife. We've all got our trouble makers, but to to suggest millwall are no worse than anyone else is stretching it a bit. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
No, be reight. The women and children in the top tier deserved to have coins thrown at them by millwall cants who had walked the entire circumference of the ground to be there -because some other Barnsley fans were gesturing at millwall cants outside.
Dont think anyone has argued that millwall are no worse than anyone else. Millwall support has a keen psychology behind it. For the last 40 years or so they have been portrayed in the media as thugs and they have consequently revelled in this. "No - one likes us" is the millwall cry, because that is what the media told them for decades. I went to cold blow lane nearly 30 years ago, we even had dear old pensioner ladies shouting "**** off you northern scum". This is a media driven culture they cannot escape from. Fundamentally though even clubs with much less of a reputation can imitate them on their big days, and like i said this is a long standing and deeply cultural problem within football.
I'd agree that we have our fair share of idiots, but in 35 + years of watching Barnsley, I have never seen a Barnsley fan go for a woman or a child. There are three times when, as a woman. I've been on the receiving end, simply for walking around in colours. Birmingham in the Playoffs (bottles thrown), Cardiff at Wembley (Cardiff fans in our faces after the game - yes one 40+ year old bloke took the trouble of crossing the road to shout in my 8 year old daughter's face), and Millwall at Wembley, where the Millwall fans as a general population were downright scumbags, including the women. We were goaded, spat at , and I was manhandled by a Millwall fan who tried to stop me walking across Wembley Way. Millwall are the scumiest set of fans I have ever come across. Total set of scruffy chavs who just don't know how to behave. Absolutely no comparison to be had in my opinion.
I never saw any problems between Barnsley v Oxford fans. My wife and I enjoyed our time around Wembley both before and after the match. The Oxford fans were very pleasant. The Millwall game was a bit different but started well. Some of their fans moved seats on the tube at Stanmore so my Wife and I could sit together, we chatted with them until we got to Wembley Park. On leaving Wembley Park the atmosphere changed and we saw lots of hostility, lots of arm waving and threats to Barnsley folk. I was a bit concerned as 4 of my Grandchildren (8-12 year olds) were at the match in club colours. 2 were in the same block as we were but the other 2 were with their Mum and Dad in the top tier but well away from the trouble. Being OAPs we never had any direct threats but not one Millwall fan spoke to us in McDs before or after the game. We didn't hang around too long outside the ground before the match. There was also a guy from Kent who said on FB he was going to come up to Barnsley to kill me after I commentated on what I saw that Day. Apparently the Barnsley Women and Children started it all. I'm still waiting for him. Cardiff and Millwall would make an interesting Wembley fixture.
Aww come on Bradford, dont let the ignorant NOLU nonsense put you off. Just beat those co*ckney plonkers and give us at least 4 points in the Champship next season.
