Mate of mine is doing some research on a boxer , one or two reports are saying he had fights at The Imperial Hall , Barnsley ,any ideas....Cheers.
I believe that boxing. Bouts were held I. A hall on Midland Street. Got loads of old posters with it on. Many of which have my uncle topping g the bill.
Tyrone seems to have it right , I've now found the same Midland St. address for it . Any photos would be appreciated if anyone can turn something up. Midland St. was also the address of the original premises of Qualter Hall, who rented them from The Midland Railway Co. I don't think it is the Civic...apparently that was previously known as the Public Hall and originally the Harvey Institute .
I'm also very interested in this as I'm trying to put a collection together for auntie who will 100 soon and her brother regularly. Topped the. Bill there. The aling with other such as bobby hines. And Billy Thompson
Are you on findmypast genealogy site ? My mate is researching a Mexborough fighter called KO Billy Yates ....there is a British newspaper archive in findmypast and he's found a lot about his great uncle . I think the Imperial Hall packed up with boxing in about 1933 , I found a bit where the promoter advertises that he is restarting the boxing with a card of schoolboy fighters , but no advertising after that ...perhaps the effects of the great depression put an end to it?
There was a venue called the midland street stadium in Barnsley according to boxing sites. Would that be the same arena or a different one? The name midland street stadium seems to refer to bouts in the 30s
Just spotted this https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-us/...0000/lot-540ffecb-8ce7-425c-9193-a3f400b6f24d Bobby Hinds ?.....mentioned on one when you blow it up .
.. These are great. But do you know I suspect. A cousin of mine be the one who sold them as he lives in that neck of the woods
Sorry tyrone....if you're like me that must be a right kick in the b******s ...some people have the soul of a hyena . An old friend of mine was a film buff , I remember him telling me in the early 1970's he'd seen a huge bonfire at the back of an old Cinema near us that had recently been taken over by a Bingo Company...they were burning hundreds of reels of silent films that had been in the cellars and storerooms .
Actually. Some of mine where the ones up in the vine and the shaw and gate at Hoyland not sure what happened. To them either
My mother has a friend quite active with the Barnsley History group (?) - says she thinks that The Imperial Hall was on Midland St. It closed in 1933 and it was most likely the top floor of The Devonshire, although not 100% certain. Could possibly have been on the other side of road before bus station was built
Don't know about the Dev thing, don't think it was at the other side because as far back as I can remember ( born in 49 ) that side was mainly railway arches used for storage. The only place I can think of is in the buildings that were demolished for the Eldon arcade and for the life of me I can't remember what was there. Anybody got any pics for Midland Street.
