Oh dear, no. This is the final straw in a devastating year for losing people. I hope the Club does something to commemorate Norman, like naming a stand after him. In modern football, where loyalty counts for nothing, he must have been unique. A real gentleman, too.
RIP Mr Barnsley FC. You are a legend in the truest sense of the word. Your Passing is very very sad news indeed.
A long, happy, valuable, and fulfilled life of a much loved and respected man, has come to a natural, peaceful end. What is terrible or dreadful about that?
My first memory of Norman was in the 1960s, when his role was probably official described as 'trainer,' which mainly seemed to involve his running on to the pitch with a bucket and wet sponge (medical kit) to slap in the face of any player who was injured. I never saw him play in goal for us. My later memory came during a tour of the stadium about ten or so years ago, when he was working in the laundry department. He had to be eighty-odd then, but was working with a much younger female. There were two Valentines Day cards in the laundry, as it was that time of the year. Innocent fun, but they obviously both enjoyed their little joke with each other. I mentioned the old bucket and sponge routine to him and asked him what he thought of today's players, to which he replied, 'pampered. Just pampered.' Such immense one-club service and so many years beyond any sort of 'retirement.' There really should be some fitting post-humus award for such a legend of the club and the game. In today's days in which the game has changed so much, Norman stands out to represent the values of the game which we always knew and loved. I hope that not all those values pass away with Norman. He leaves a great legacy and great memories covering so many years. Condolences to his family, RIP Norman
Really sad news. The club and Oakwell will never be the same again but his mark on it will last forever and he'll never be forgotten. I hope he felt some contentment in his final months with the Wembley wins and the way he leaves his beloved club with a feeling of togetherness around the place. Condolences to all his family and friends. You'll be missed, Norman
RIP Norman. tears to my eyes. There will never be another - NEVER! sod to pukka pies/palmer... or what ever the stands are sponsored by. THERE HAS TO BE A STAND NAMED AFTER HIM! I'd rename the whole stadium if it was to me! but I'm sure he loved the name oakwell, he lived and breathed oakwell. the least the club can do is name a stand after him!!
