    I've been hearing that the A1 is a total disaster at the minute. What time should I set off from Sleaford to arrive in tarn around 6.15-6.30 on Friday? Usually 5.00 would be fine.

    you could also take this alternative route

    go to Newark then head towards Mansfield on the A617 to join the M1 at Junction 29 . A bit longer perhaps ( about a 2 hour run) but maybe clear for you.

    I think Newark's the problem that he's trying to address...utter disaster road zone...especially Friday afternoons.

    or alternatively ....

    go to Newark the get on the A57 and head for Ollerton past Worksop and join the M1 at J 31 (near aston ) about 1hr 45mins

    Cheers all. I was thinking of maybe going via Lincoln, but I'm not sure exactly where the worst bits of the A1 are supposed to be. Trying to hit the M1 is also possible, though I reckon it will be an absolute nightmare round Meadowhall.

    I would go through Lincoln, that's the way I go to pick up the A57 (just save 40p for the toll bridge) and then onto the A1.

    Exactly this. I used to work in Newark, and the A1 was a ******* horror show. Particularly, as said, on Fridays. Sometimes took 1:30 from Sheffield and this was early afternoon! AVOID! AVOID!
