[h=4]Dont know how many of you are aware but actual voter count is as follows Trump 59,611,678 votes 47.5% Clinton 59,814,018 votes 47.7%[/h] So despite more American voters voting for Clinton, Trump wins by a comfortable majority in the Electoral college Thats just wrong - no other words for it Note there are still a couple of states to declare but its unlikely that Trump will overtake Clinton in the "popular" vote
Obviously because then the person that lost wouldn't have had more votes than the winner, so it clearly isn't fair just like the electoral system in the UK
This argument wouldn't have been put forward if Clinton would have won. Whether I agree with it or not, those who lost voting either Brexit or Trump seem to have the same 'sore loser ' mentality. If Britain would have stayed in the EU, I couldn't see those who wanted it protesting and likewise if Trump had lost. People ask for a democratic system yet kick off if they lose. Americans knew how the voting system would be before they voted for Trump or Clinton.
It's the way the American electoral system works so whether it is right or wrong is a point of debate but they are the rules. It's not the first time it has happened and it won't be the last.
Interesting one this. I was one of the 48.9% of the population who voted to stay in the EU. I now appear to either have no voice or, if I try to have one, I'm accused of being a 'sore loser'. I keep hearing people (particularly certain politicians and sections of the media) stating that the 'British people' voted for Brexit. This is patently untrue. A very small majority voted to Brexit. Scotland and Northern Ireland had significant majorities voting the other way. Denying any sort of voice to virtually half the population, whose lives may well be seriously affected by the outcome, does not seem to me to be particularly 'democratic'.
The grape growing industry has a lot to answer for because their appears to be an astonishing amount of sour ones this year
Dont be silly of course it would. Even though I would have "preferred" a Clinton win I would still have made the same point, and I am sure lots of Trump supporters would have been making the same point Really - I lost the Brexit vote and yes I am a sore loser as its quite likely to cost me my job - or at the very least make it much more difficult so of course I am going to be unhappy. Did the miners just shrug their shoulders and get on with things because a democratically elected thatcher government closed all the pits - of course not Trump is different - its another country and nothing to do with me. I'd have preferred a different president - but I'd also prefer a different one in Russia - not much I can do and it doesnt have the same direct impact on me Trump changes nothing in terms of my rights Brexit removes my EU citizenship I knew the british voting system when along with 63% of voters I voted against Cameron and the tories - I dont like that either and think our voting system is even more flawed than the US one but the only alternative is to not vote at all which is even worse
Everybody understands that it IS the system and that it's happened before, but does that make it right?! Of course not. It's similar to the election here, where UkIP got 4 million votes and Green got a million (don't remember the exact figures so don't shoot me if they're a little wrong) but they've only got a couple of MPs between them. It's mad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
George W Bush - the last Republican president - also lost the popular vote. However, the two before that were well over 100 years ago.
The bizarre thing about American politics is that for the last 8 years there has been a Democrat President but there has been a majority of Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives so not much has been done. To compare with the UK - we'd find it odd were Teresa May, Tory PM, was trying to get legislation through Parliament if the majority of MP's were Labour.
You must be joking. If Trump had lost by any margin, both himself and his supporters would have ranted nonsense for months about electoral fraud and the system.
Are you crazy. Trump was calling it fixed and kicking up a fuss before it even took place if he'd lost in this way we'd never have heard the end of it.
Again. So stupid. Farage before the election saying and Brexit losing 48-52 would be unfinished business. Trump claiming it would be fixed when he thought he'd lose. Basically you're full of ****.
Of course it's fair. Same system as over here. Trump won required votes to win the particular state/boundary vote. The people have voted. Now they have to get on with it
