I would say the people of the industrial areas of Britain should ask themselves; what have we done to fight back?

 

He is a multi-billionaire, who's recognised across the globe for doing very little other than being on TV, if anything he's just a radical member of the global elite

 

Not elected a racist, sexist, lieing bigot, who brags about dodging tax and has even remarked he wants to shag his own daughter, it's not a matter of politics, he's just an appalling human

 

I think it's an example of how powerful the general public are .

 

Fight back is the operative word as opposed to shoot ourselves in the foot.

I agree, who in our parliament genuinely represents the people? Probably the same number of MPs as during the formation of the Labour Party, the rest are a waste of time.

Not a single one, it's a very well paid vocation for them topped up by a grotesque amount of expenses. The return from them for our tax money is pathetic and I haven't a scratch of respect for any one of them.

 

That's the problem, it's the greedy individuals that sit in the positions for years on end (especially in safe seats) earning vasts amounts of money for doing virtually sod all, if there is to be any change in any western democracy the whole system needs revising, not just picking one corrupt idiot over another because they can shout the loudest. Both here and in 'Merica the system just plays towards the hands of the people in charge and there's very rarely any change because why would they want to give up power and their cushy positions just because others think it's unfair.

 

If you do not think the main parties represent you and your views, then you have three choices:

1). Form a party and stand for election campaigning for your beliefs
2). Join one of the main parties and get selected to stand for election.
3). Sit around and moan about it while nothing changes.

Most people will do #3 - and I include myself in that, but any of us could do the first two with enough motivation.

Why do we always get this intellectual superiority when votes don't go the way they should. The general public aren't dangerously thick, they are just sick and tired of feeling left behind and are totally disenfranchised with mainstream politics.

People haven't suddenly become stupid, racist bigots, they are just so angry with mainstream politics that they're protesting in the only way they think they can.

The political elite need to take a long hard look at themselves - they are to blame for this.

 

Yes and no. I genuinely believe that the majority of the electorate are not very bright, hence them being so easily manipulated by the likes of Murdoch in the UK, Russian state TV and other populist media in any country. And yet, as you quite rightly mention, people haven't suddenly become less smart. The same electorates with the same intellectual capacity have often given us more "desirable" results, depending on where you stand in the political spectrum. The problem that we're facing at the minute is one of hugely misguided protest votes, and its causes are indeed deeply systemic. The fact that the US College system is as ridiculously unfair and archaic as FPTP in the UK doesn't help matters, but had the Democrats fielded a candidate who the most disenfranchised in society felt would listen to their concerns, it would never have even been an issue.
