Twenty five years ago Barnsley, under Mel Machin, beat Ossie Ardiles' Newcastle 3-0. We were in control from the first minute to the last and, in the end, the scoreline flattered them. All our goals were scored in the first half (Andy Rammell, Wayne Bullimore, Mark Robinson) at the Kop end. If anything, we played even better in the second half. Unfortunately, Newcastle's goalie Tommy Wright (the current St. Johnstone manager) had an absolute blinder. It was as good a performance from David Currie as I ever saw him play for us, without actually getting on the score sheet. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1991_1992/30/nov/index.shtml I'm not for a second suggestion it'll happen again tomorrow night. But it's nice for this old bugger to reminisce over such games.
Think they were in the bottom 3 at the time and were in a right mess and you are right about the chances we missed or wright saved, could have been a cricket score. The return fixture we drew 1 .1 in keegans second home game in charge in front of 30 thousand ,double what they had been pulling for home fixtures upto that point in the season, sithi.
Currie was unplayable that day but then on his day he always was. Other than Hignett who wasn't really a forward I can't think of anyone we've had since DC who when on form was unstoppable. Not dismissing the quality of other players but the style DC played was beautiful. His debut was another example and the Bournemouth game
Speaking of Mel I reckon we should get him to organise our defence. We wouldnt let many in though the formation might change to 9-1-0 with O'connell brought out of retirement to play the loan player in their half role.
Randy Camel What's he doing these days? Just did a search and according to a Walsall forum he lives near Walsall and was planning to go to the League match against us in March this year. Loved his time at Barnsley, the club, town and supporters.
Because you were too young when Norman was gaffer? And going through your experimental drug phase when Danny was King?
You may touch on several pertinent points. I think it was about a sense of togetherness us against them. Fighting the odds. Having a bit of cash and no responsibilities. Oh and Brendan played for us and Gerry. And football hadn't been ruined by Sky
I remember a Newcastle team in the mid 80s on a midweek match thumping us 5-0. Think it was when then had the likes of Keegan Waddle McDermott n Varadi playing for them.
Andy Saville, not Bullimore. But you're right otherwise. Sorry old pal. I'm just putting that exact video together for our twitter account. Had to be a tw@t and correct thi.
And for those who might be saying "David who?" He was Darlington's best player and top scorer and we got him for a bargain £150,000. Apart from the fact that we sold him on for £700,000 he was a fantastic signing. Big, strong, skill on the ball and scored goals. Not bad for Fourth Division rubbish
I'm sure the season before, 90/91, we also drew 0-0 at Newcastle, might have been Steve Cooper's last appearance for us. Anyway, we played 5-4-1, took Cooper off with about 20-25 mins to go if I remember correctly, and saw the game out playing 5-5-0.
Bullimore scored against Wolves in the last home game of the 91/92 season. We won 2-0, Rammell got the other - think that was his only goal for us.
