    a giraffe in the deep end at the Metrodome - a mere paddle up to the belly.

    The OP must take into account the possibility that the giraffe finding itself in deep water may CHOOSE not to swim.

    Just someone doesn't do a certain activity doesn't mean they can't...

    my old Polish grandfather told me that pigs can swim - but because their trotters scratch their jowls as they swim and cause so much discomfort they stop swimming and sink after a short time.

    maybe the long neck is evolutionary so it can keep its head above the surface whilst its feet are on the bottom.
