No controlled expenditure is what yiu do once you've baselined the economy. Personally I'd have liked to have seen a couple more years of the tight purse strings, so thaywehad a proper war chest.

However worh the brexit diaster looming they done have much wiggle room

It's a massive gamble but with brexit it's a gamble we have to take

    Tight purse strings?

More debt added in last 6 years than every Labour government EVER.

The way Corbyn gets reported - and tbf his conference speech - has left an opening for the Conservatives to try to appeal to traditional Labour areas and voters - however it's interesting that on both sides, the policies that get the greatest analysis/criticism from the media are those that appear to impinge on the rights of multinationals to behave how they wish - from tax avoidance to importing cheap disposable labour. Not difficult to see who 'really' sets the agenda.

They do what they want anyway. They've gone through with fracking in Lancs even though the local council opposed it

The Tories can position themselves anywhere they want until Corbyn has led Labour to crushing electoral defeat.

With Labour and UKIP imploding the SNP is the only real opposition, except for the BBC/Channel 4/Guardian/almost all celebrities/the Church of England/Sadiq Khan etc

very true, the Tories have an open mandate due to the Labour party being as it is for the foreseeable future.

Labour have given up large swathes of the centre ground, why not take it?

Tories all talk and no action as usual
Every time they make big speeches and do none of it.

Marlon, love your loyalty to the party but at sometime you will have to admit there is something wrong in the state of Denmark (aka Labour party)

Something is "rotten" in the state of Denmark, please.

Bear in mind that they've been a pretty unusual six years - ie worst economic depression for 80+ yrs.
As I understand it we've not paid our debts off but we've slowed down the rate at which our debt is growing

Brexit result showed there was a massive disenchantment with the London centric establishment.
After that vote any political party has to demonstrate relevance in the north.
Marquee Infrastructure projects and funding house building (or appearing to by cynically gifting Local Authority land to developers/house builders) are things you can point at that you're doing to try to reconnect with those northern voters.

    For 'northern' read birminchester ☺️

Given what's been said over the last couple of days, you could also argue the Tories are going more to the right. The rhetoric on immigration and that being a citizen of the world is likened as being akin to being a citizen of nowhere is very reminiscent of Hitler. Ukip are setting the agenda to some degree and it's very worrying.

the tories are seeing (as has been said) the labour party in utter turmoil, together with their thinking that the ukip/brexiteers voting public have shifted their morals from the left to the right of politics, they are now trying to seize the moment and self proclaim themselves to be the party of the working class.
the working class areas that voted in their millions to leave the eu will never ever be tory voters,no one will ever forget what those cnuts did during the 80's when they shut our industries down simply to get rid of the collective union power.
its up to the labour party to get the working class voting for them again, something i feel is decades away from happening.

Nothing to do with loyalty to my party whatsoever ,
Just stating a fact every Tory incoming prime minister has preached loyalty and fairness to All and done the complete opposite and waged war on whichever workers their corporate friends urge.
Remember Thatcher's speech and what happened after ,Same with Major and Cameron always looking for someone to exploit .
Things may be happening to the labour party but the Tories are the same old rotten bstds they've ever been.
