That surely had to be the clubs initial aim.

Anything else beyond that has to be seen as a bonus.

The club is now in a hopefully healthy financial position that will see us build and progress both on and off the field

With the current financial situation in football and the teams we are competing against, my target is to have a positive goal difference. If we achieved that, everything else would take care of itself.

Staying up should be the very least we aim to achieve. The last time we were in this league staying up was deemed a success and I think that played a part in us finally being relegated. Success would be mid table for me. Don't get why teams celebrate just staying up. Look at Salford in the million pound game last weekend. Stayed in the super league with a one point win. Fair enough be happy at not being relegated but they celebrated at the end like they had won the league leaders shield or something.

I think the great start to the season may prove vital come next May. Weather we have.. been found out.. or the just ..run out of a bit of steam from last seasons momentum.., I don't know. Probably a bit of both.
Plus I think the 4-0 win at Wolves was a massive turning point, for two reasons. One, after that game, no one thought of us as little Barnsley any more, everyone's brought us their A game since. IE Reading and Villa have been way tougher than Derby and QPR's, just turn up and the game is ours attitude
And two.. Maybe some of the players started to believe a bit of the hype, and how good they are. And started to think that they could win games without being in top gear. It was never going to be a 5-10 game season. And if some of the fans think.. piece of pi55 this Championship lark.. I fear in the next few months they'll know different..

Im still not sure that some of our non/lower league diamonds are good enough yet, people do get written off too early in sport, But they also get put on a pedestal far too early as well.. we'll look at the end of the season to see who as passed, and who as failed.
Then there's the Tommy Wright factor how much input did he actually have? Hecky was always the front man, giving interviews and sutch ..But who really had the power over the players. The next few games/months are going to be interesting.
I still don't think Hecky knows his best team and formation for this league. 442 worked second have of last season, but this... last season star (Hammill) as been no more than a also ran, for whatever reason, the other winger Kent/Watkins have at best been sporadic .. we get overrun in midfield with 2 verses 3, and miss a big lad up top. And our defence and keeper are prone to lapse or two a game..

But hey if we go back down, we can be the Man city of the third division... but isn't it a given that Barnsley fans hate clubs with money, or is that just when its not us..

Would have taken slaying up before a ball was kicked, so nowts really changed apart from I now believe we could do it with a few games to spare.

To be fair we have just been promoted via the play offs from league one where we finished 6th. I'd take staying up and that should be our aim, we then need to try build on this year on year establish our self'sin this league. Our problem last time was we signed has beens/never beens and stagnated. We need to use brentford as an example they have improved year on year and bought young players mostly the cream from league one and two. Some people have got ahead their selves because we have had a good start think we should be top 10 team this season.

Staying up is the bare minimum.

But should not be the only target this season.

We need to finish as high as physically possible. If we finish 4th from bottom this season, we'll get stuck in the same hole as last time. The same hole that Rotherham are in.

We've got the infrastructure in place to be much stronger than last time, so we need to aim as high as possible.

We need to aim for midtable in my opinion, and anything above that is a bonus.

In this league I always count up from the bottom and count up to 50 points. The sooner we get to 50 points the better but as others have said it is a tough league. However, 15 points from 10 games is a good start and there are more poor teams in the Championship than I imagined before the season started.

Agree. Staying up is not aspirational enough. I'd go further in fact and say that if the Reds aren't in the Champions League by 2020 the fans should boycott the club as a protest!
Seriously though we should not just be aiming to stay up at any time. The same would be true for me if we did ever get back to the Premier League. We should be consistently trying to punch above our weight.

I wouldn't. I think the squad we have now is much better than that.

I suspect 50% of teams in the league would take it and we are one of them.

As much as I luv thi JackTatty, I hate it when folk say stuff like that. Anyone who would accept your proposal, would be letting themselves in for one very miserable, squeaky loved season and is very unlikely to have the stomach for a serious scrap any rooerd... And any player who would settle for owt like that, would be better off warming a bench somewhere else and getting paid for nowt.!!

PROMOTION OR BUST, YER BASTURDS!! :D

Paul in my opening post I said staying up has to be the clubs initial aim.

Therefore the sooner we reach 50 points the better and anything else is a bonus.

Asking who would take a 4th from bottom finish now was just a question I was putting out there and not actually where I believe we will end up this season. I can see us finishing in a comfortable mid table place but I would like to see the club invest in a couple of experiences defenders in January and erhaps a central midfielder.

Aye, I agree with that. It's the hypothetical scenarios I struggle with. They hurt my brain.. :D
