I only got back from my holidays last night and have just watched the first half of the Villa match on Player. Matt - are you aware of the poor sound quality on Wayne Goodison's microphone? I must have got about 10% of his comments throughout the half and absolutely NONE of his summary at the end. Was it his broadcasting voice not being strong enough, or a comms problem? It's a great idea having former players co-commentating but a complete waste of time if you can't hear them. Your voice was crystal clear, as usual. Wayne's was more of a low-level mumble
Hi pal. Yes it was my fault as his mic feed volume was too low and I didn't notice until afterwards. Real shame as his analysis was excellent and he is very articulate.

Ok, thanks for the response. I have just watched the second half and it seemed to be better. As you say he is an articulate speaker - just wish we could have heard all of it! I'm not a tecchy, and I have no idea how you produce these things, but isn't it possible to do sound checks before the match starts, just so that you know the levels are right on both mics? Sound quality is my one bug-bear as far as Player is concerned. The player or management interviews are often spoiled by only hearing one side of it. In any Q&A it's always nice to hear the question and the answer in equal measures.
I'm using my own equipment and the mics could be better. WG actually had the best one. It was obviously very noisy inside Oakwell - he sounded fine in my headphones, but that didn't transmit to the recording, unfortunately. I could have amplified his audio in post production, but it would have taken several hours that I didn't have, to rectify. I'll make sure the levels are right on the next occasion I'm joined by a summariser. Just one of those blips that occur occasionally.
I'm using all my own equipment and couldn't afford to replace, so I've asked them if they can provide an headset. Current mics are good enough if held close enough to the mouth.
Thanks for the explanation. None of my comments should be taken as criticism. I'm happy that you are doing what you do because watching the playbacks with no commentary was just wrong. As I've said on here many times, the Player service is good value for money but there is always room for improvement.
I was impressed with Wayne Goodison when he was being interviewed by Bondy in Redfearn's Bar prior to the match.
I agree with you. I knew as soon as I checked the file when I got home after the game that WG's levels were too low. I thought about amplifying but it would've meant far too much work with both feeds being on one audio track. I think he must have been holding the mic at a distance and I didn't really notice in real time. I'll be double checking from now on. Cheers.
Some people are naturally soft-spoken so do not project their voices well - perhaps Wayne is one? I don't like hysterical-sounding commentators but somewhere inbetween is good.
I've just Googled him and can vaguely remember him now . He was a bonny lad in his hey day . Time takes its toll .
