Does any one remember playing Villa at Oakwell in the early 70's?. We drew 1-1 with John Mcphee scoring a penalty for us. I remember the Ponty End was divided that day with both sets of fans separated by a thin line of police.A very tasty game both on and of the pitch.
BigLil was it Les Lea, Frank Sharpe and a.n other's debut that day. I seem to recall 3 debutants but my mind could be playing tricks.
If memory serves me right the Villa fans thought the Barnsley fans had given up when, in the closing minutes of the match, the bulk of the Barnsley support had vacated the Ponte End. Unbeknown to the Villa fans some of the Barnsley fans were waiting on the bridge over the Jumble Lane crossing and Villa fans heading back to the station were greeted by a load of objects being thrown from the bridge in their general direction.
Villa fans singing "Jozef Venglos travelling army" followed by four claps and repeated for the entire second half. The first time l'd heard that song sang and now it's one of the most common in football. 90-91 season, a league cup tie which we lost 1-0.
My late Father & I were on the bus back to Dodworth before that. But I heard about all the post match fighting at school on Monday morning. I'd guess that's what you're referring to.
To be honest, I thought Sharp, Lea & Kear had all made their debuts earlier than the Villa match. But I could be wrong.
I think your mind was playing tricks Les Lea's debut was the 2nd game in, away at Bradford. Sharp made his debut in the same match. The team against Villa was Arblaster, Murphy, Booth, Winstanley, Howard, McPhee, Kear, Boardman, Lea, Evans and Sharp.
Ricky Villa That beard That jinking run That goal Midweek cup final reply goal at Wembley under the floodlights Jumpers for goalposts.
That's correct. I remember going to Bradford on the service bus (reading the NME on the way!). I ended up on the away end (for reasons I can't remember; certainly not hooliganism!)and nearly got my head caved in. I think we lost 4-0 or 4-1.
One of my earliest memories of being at a football game was at home to Villa in the cup in the early to mid 90's. It's certainly the first game I recall being sat in the East Stand for. If I remember right we lost 2-0. Sent from my phone using my hands
I was talking to Les after last nights game and he confirmed his debut was against Bradford City. Could it have been Lea's,Sharp and Kears home debut then?
