Just an observation... In spite of lots of goals last season I have never thought Winnall had the quality to step up to Championship level. For me he missed loads of chances in League One when it looked like he was nailed on to score. The goals he scored reflected the fact that he was being well-serviced at that level. Credit to him for the goals he did score of course and it's just my opinion that he will not develop into a top striker, mainly because of the point I've just made. However......... I might be wrong in what I'm saying and so, in context from my perspective, I can't understand why people are giving him lots of grief on here at this stage. It's very early days and the line-up, partnerships, understandings are still forming. To slag him off as some seem to be doing just seems a bit harsh at the moment. Give him a break folks and give him and everyone else for that matter a bit more time. Hope this post makes sense cos it might sound to some a tad contradictory!!
Think people are more annoyed that other strikers are being left out of the team for him when they've proved it this season and he hasn't really, only a few on here have a real problem with him
People are giving him greif because people HAVE to give someone grief. They just have to. We are doing really well. We were the top scorers in the division, doing well defensively, midfield is sound . . . nothing to complain about there. Oh, wait a minute, our 20+ goal a sean man from last season isn't quite at it. Quick, put the knife in.
It's not that at all - fans that watch the game closely can see that Winnall gets into scoring positions well but his actual score per chance is quite low Only got to watch the Play off final to see this
People have critisised him before today which I thought was harsh as he got injured on the 1st game and you have to give him time. But yesterdays performance was woeful I'd go as far to say sam winnall at his worst. I'm not ruling him out from been a championship goal scorer but for me atm he is our 4th choice striker. And this is a player who we had bids for last season and apparently is running his contract down. He may have to reconsider that if he doesn't start scoring.
He's effectively only played 4 games and has scored 1 goal. Yesterday the service wasn't great and Armstrong was no more effective until Bradshaw came on. I don't think Winnall should play with Armstrong because Winnall's better with someone who creates chances for him i.e. Watkins. On form Watkins, Armstrong and Bradshaw deserve to start over Winnall, but that will change throughout the season
The service wasn't great? Winnall had enough chances yesterday to score at least 2 goals. And I think you are right him and armstrong shouldn't play together.
I think it's because his game outside of the box sometimes looks below par with the others around him but he comes alive in the box and usually has a few chances and scores. Some people behind me yesterday were cheering as he got brought off, it's pretty ridiculous to cheer any Barnsley player off in my opinion but especially not one who got as many goals as he did last season. Anyway I think Marley will come into the side and it'll probably be for Winnall.
The header he had at the Ponty end that just went wide was just behind him and I thought he`d done quite well (rotating his head) to get it so close to the target, but apparently this was a sitter. We have four decent strikers and am sure given time that Hecky will find out what his best partnership is for any given match. Shame that showing our attacking intent in the transfer market will have this board slagging off our strikers all through the season match by match.
Well maybe. I can only remember one which was from a corner. From open play the service wasn't as good as in previous games. I would rather a striker was missing chances than not getting into goal scoring chances at all, though, which is why when Winnall gets into good runs of scoring he gets loads of goals because he always gets into the right positions. Based on what I've seen of them, Winnall and Bradshaw are poachers, Armstrong can create more chances out of his own work and score more outside the box, and Watkins is in general more of an assist-maker but he gets his fair share of goals himself, which is why so many want him to start, and rightly so. I've said I'd like to see Bradshaw and Armstrong start together because they did well yesterday, but certainly couldn't complain is Watkins started with either
Sam winnall doesn't impress me... He can't hold the ball up and isn't strong and that's why I think Watkins is much better. (May get stick for this opinion).
This is the truth brother. Amen. We are 4th in the Champ. Yet folk are bairning after a defeat. Beggars belief.
Personally think most of the criticism of winnall is fair. I'm chuffed with our start to the season and think winnall could still come good in the championship. Doesn't mean I can't hold the opinion that he has been poor so far and I have been more impressed by our other three strikers. Not necessarily "putting the knife in" or "bairning", just stating an opinion. Sent from my Kestrel using Tapatalk
Not another critism just abit disappointed when winnall was subbed he didn't exactly shake a leg to get off pitch we was 2 nil down against ten men and he strolls off as if it's nil nil.
agreed i can live with any striker missing a chance thats football. but i was very unhappy with this it was like he was time wasting. I in the end it made no difference but just a little attitude thing i didnt like.
