I expected that the club and its Chief Coach would put its bravest face towards the Moncur loan transfer fiasco. I was wrong. I read the article on the Chronicle web site with increasing feelings of concern. There was the fact that Moncur had given up the fight to establish a starting place in the team after just 5 league games. I'm sorry, but a footballer needs several qualities which are not negotiable. The first of these is a team ethic. Whatever is best for the team is best for the individuals that comprise it. The second is determination allied to a never-say-die attitude. Whatever obstacles are placed in front of you are treated as challenges, hurdles that must be overcome, challenges to prove how strong your character and determination to succeed are. There is no doubt that sometimes, no matter how determined you are, the Chief Coach just does not fancy you and you have to move on. But after just 5 games ....

The second worry that I had is that Moncur's father seems to want to run the show, because no manager can put up with divided loyalty from his players. In Moncur's case, we potentially have a situation that Hecky is telling him all day long what he wants from him, and when he gets home, his father is telling him that the Chief Coach is wrong. Frankly, if this is what is happening, the player has no future in the game. Barnsley FC has invested a considerable sum in a player who most likely will find a similar situation at Peterborough to the one that he has encountered at Oakwell. The only real solution is to break the link to the father, but how can you convince the boy that a solution which is so painful is the right one.

From the distance that I am viewing this problem, it looks a right mess.

I agree with your analysis, although I think the club have done well to be up front about it and ship him out sharpish. We can only hope that he grows up a bit over the next few months or, as you say, he'll struggle to get very far as a footballer.

I actually think that it would be no bad thing if he found himself in the same situation at Peterborough.

What a complicated nonsense . Every player is different, some might want to sit it out for months on end hoping for a glimpse at the first team . Its seems George Moncur took the option of a young man wanting to play regular football. I dont know his father but it seems that he has the best ( in his oppinion) intentions of his son's footballing future . Look at it from his point of view....first team football at Peterbrough every week or another few months on the bench with us . What would you do ? are we seeing it through oakwell tinted glasses?

Bollacks. Surely he should want to test himself the best players. He's not going to get that at Peterborough really.

No. We're just speculating , cos it's fascinating to do so, without full access to the facts that would enable the full and proper judgement to be arrived at.

I agree with you..I think. The mess is not of our doing. The dad seems to be wielding a disruptive influence. If his attitude persists he could negatively impact his kids career.
I was surprised but if he doesn't want to be here and isn't prepared to fight for his place then good riddance. If we make money on him then it's a good piece of business.
I also agree with the supposition that his attitude potentially could gave had a negative impact. Interesting that his best mate Elliot is staying.mprobsbly shown more commitment to our cause.

Spot on were all speculating . All I'm saying is that a player with absolutely no history or links with us has an opportunity to play first team football has taken it .

Hmmm, can't see Conor doing as his dad tells him though; his leadership speaks volumes in comparison.

Game time is when we, the fans, get to judge the ability of each player. The Chief Coach gets to see them every day. He assesses their strengths and their weaknesses every day. He works with them on those aspects of their game as well as how they might fit in with the skills and attributes of the other players to form a strong and coherent whole. If the Chief Coach judges that a player does not fit in, he will tell him how to change/improve his game so that he does fit in, but it is then up to the player. Does the player change, or does he carry on as normal. My guess is that Moncur or his father do not want to make the changes, that it is far easier to run away and find somewhere much easier, where his current game is better suited to the team ethos. I do not know whether he will find it at Peterborough, but I do know that running away from a problem is not the solution.

He could easily have been in contention should Conor get injured or banned.

He surely should have backed his own ability to at least give the manager a headache

Agreed.

Though I have always struggled to see him as CH's stand in.

It has always been "where do we play him?"

Unless we could coach him to into what CH blossomed into, about 9 or 10 months ago.

That will not now be an option.

Tell him to **** off and get rid. Get our money back in January and tell him it's a act of God. **** hair anyway.

I agree with most of your points but not your conclusion. Worst case scenario, we sell him. We should be able to get what we paid for him and even if there was a slight loss we can now afford it. And while he's on loan it will be a case of out of sight out of mind.

You can forgive the club one dodgy transfer with all the great ones we've made over recent years.

I don't see how this is a disaster or fiasco at all. Just one of those things

And who knows, fingers crossed he comes back with new determination and becomes a great player for us

All well and good but how much can he improve in the space of 2 months sitting on the bench ? and how do you know he hasn't tried to change his game ? . Hecky said he didn't want him to go so that would suggest he was happy with him . It's obvious at the moment that he wont replace Conor or Josh and rightly so . Maybe he will improve as a player and a professional whilst in the first team at Peterborough and come back a better player . We bought George Moncur because of his performances as a Colchester player and now it seems we want a different George Moncur .

 

Genuinely shocking behaviour from a player relgated to league 2. Maybe he felt he didn't need to work hard and "the almighty" would secure his place.
