I have just perused the plans for your new library and I must admit that putting the children's library upstairs is a stroke of genius. I suggest you put the disabled section on the roof to really top it off

You had to use stairs to get to the old children's library - most clothes shops have children's clothes on 1st or 2nd floor. I'm sure there will be a lift.. not a problem. Anyway books on lower floors will be accessed more easily for the older generations - get them walking upstairs instead??

Not exactly a problem but hardly good design either is it. Surely when you are building a brand new purpose built building you use a bit of common sense and put the area for children on the ground floor.

The reason they are upstairs in shops is twofold, firstly it's because those items are high risk of theft and secondly it forced the shopper to walk through the shop to get to them. A parent with child tends to go straight to what they want and out again by locating them on the upper floor it forces them past other items.

Why isn't that logic applied to books

Which one? The logic of in and out? Because a library is a service, not a profit making shop

So get the old dears walking upstairs then - that makes sense. You go into a shop and you'll find that women's clothes are downstairs because these are their main customers and source of profit. No VAT on children's clothes so little return. Woman have to go past them to get to children's and make more impulse buys

I don't see the problem myself. Children would love going upstairs, it would make the trip more exciting for them. The only problem I forsee is that it might be awkward for parents who may also have pushchairs with young children but hopefully there would be a lift. They could have stairs like this:

No ,getting parents to go past other book categories ,more likely to get one out for themselves ,if kids section is next to the front door they are in and out. Libraries still need to lend out books to stay open

Exactly the reason women's clothes are downstairs in a department store - not my reason but my mums who has 30 years experience working in retail

They've put it upstairs cos most kids these days are fatties. At least they are doing so something to combat fat kids. Don't put any lifts in either, just lots of stairs ...

I just cannot see your logic here. Are children incapable of walking up and down stairs these days? Are children now to be compared to disabled people in that they all have the same access difficulties? The Shambles Street library children section was down in the basement. Elderly people need groundfloor access more. Toddlers might struggle but they're not going to be borrowing many books at that age. The present library on Wellington Street has stair access to every floor. Lots of schools have stairs. Children can get up and down stairs alright in most cases. It may even reduce diabetes.

The kids section was downstairs in the old library and needed the stairs or a lift to get to it.

Put kids depts up the top of the Town Hall, might get the little fat slobs to lose some weight.
I am entitled to an opinion, so there.
