But it's one of the things that has attracted people to Barnsley for years - coach trips used to come to Barnsley on Market Days - market was always heaving

Coaches Still do on a Wednesday but not many nowadays and nowhere near full.
Could do with a Joe Edwards type of stall.

Of course but you can't rely on that and that alone because if you do that you are turning away huge numbers of visitors who are looking for other things

As a market trader myself I find some comments slightly disrespectful. Tilertoes clearly has zero knowledge about anything to do with the town center and how people shop, he's talking out of his arse and is an ignorant bellend.

I don't work on barnsley market anymore, however I do work at Hoyland Market and Goldthorpe market. Yes the yellow building is temporary, those on the semi indoor market are in the process of moving stock and building units as we speak. The next phase will be knocking the multistory down, then it will be kicking poundland out of the old little woods and moving the meat and fish in there while the developers knock down that part of the market.

Some very odd comments about barnsley markets, just to let you know on Wednesdays 12 coaches come from all over the country to visit barnsley market, it is currently rated the 2nd best market in the country only behind bury market. Friday market has 30 coaches and Saturday has anything gets upto 50.

Admittedly there is some ***** on the market, but on the other hand there as some brilliant traders. Some people need to stop being a complete snob as it's the market that brings tens of thousands of tourists to the town which has allowed this development to happen.

Knew there were some coaches still coming but those numbers have pleasantly surprised me tbh

Love the market - there is a good feeling to it - quality of the food especially is good and prices are reasonable. Hopefully when the development is done it will remain at the hub of the centre

It's was more than that mate, but since they moved to open market onto the precinct it has hit the semi open traders hard, many of them have moved to Doncaster and Chesterfield. Traders on the precinct have seen their takings shoot up which is promising as it will encourage more people to use the market when it moves back to its permanent spot.

The tripe stall in barnsley is the last remaining one of its kind. It fetches customers from places you really wouldn't believe.

I know BMBC gets slated, but the market operations team are fantastic and worth their weight in gold.

Went past the tripe stall on Saturday you wouldn't think there would be much call for it but must do some business as it's been there a while

The tripe stall is regularly used by my dad. He likes his tripe, pig bag and elder .
I always make a point of using the market at weekends ,some of the banter is hilarious .
BMBC have always tried to do right by market and it's traders, customers even though they haven't always got it right they do try.
Good to know the market is at the forefront of the planning ,markets are the way forward imo the big stores have had their day in town centre's and community inspired shopping is the way forward.
If we build it they will come ( clique)

The demand is crazy mate, I've heard of people traveling as far as Gateshead to visit.

What I will say is markets aren't what they used to be, but there will be a revival in the next 10 years. I love my job, I've done it for 7 years now, the atmosphere and hustle and bustle is brilliant.

The one downside to the job is high rents, my rent at Hoyland comes to 48 pound a day and I do 3 days there. Aswell is goldthorpe market which is fairly cheap, and also Chesterfield market on Mondays and Fridays. I pay over 320 pound per week.

Barnsley market will be great, it will help the town no end. Hoyland Market has moved recently and it was sad to leave the old market but in 12 months time most people will be delighted it has moved. It's all about keeping up with the times.

No longer on barnsley mate, but I own a plants and flower stall. Friends of mine also run the plant stall which is now at Barnsley near Halifax bank.

Too many ugly new buildings being built like the bus station and the new college, bit pointless getting rid of the ugly 60s brutalist buildings and building ugly modern ones instead.

The new college's are fantastic buildings, the area around the town hall is looking very impressive.

And then you try to find a clothes shop. There are going to be umpteen extra students in town starting in September, all wanting a night out in new clobber. Off to Leeds and Sheffield they go then.
I agree that that particular end of town from the glasshouse, lamp room, new offices, new 6th form, new building and sports college, new college, town hall and surroundings, arcade, back of civic and Mandela gardens are looking good.
That's it though, they could have continued at the town end roundabout and spuggy park and drove the theme from that end but chose to put a bargain shop next to a lidl across from the job centre next to a cash converters as the first impression you get of Barnsley town centre as you get off the m1.

That big sign saying closed must mean something else...
