Chuffin ell I can remember that building. Youve just made a happy man feel very old Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
They said they were bringing the beach back for kids to play on First look at the new market looks like they've built a huge sand castle in the middle of town
After living in Wombwell for 30 years l moved to the town centre 6 year ago and lm absolutely loving the changes, the fire to the eyesore is a blessing in disguise no one had the money to renovate it properly. This is the best position the town centre is in for over 50 years and I'm about to buy a commercial property in it.
First time I've walked around town for a while also for me and I couldn't believe the market building. So ugly. Why that colour? In the whole spectrum that diarrhoea brown is about the last colour i would pick. What is wrong with the planners?? At least the old set up had some brutalist bladerunner awe about it
The closure of the schools has happened really suddenly. It's only 11 years since I left school, but it seems all of the schools which were around when I left have since closed. When I was at school, there was a slight influx of kids who had moved from Elmhurst, which was he first to close, and I found that difficult to comprehend that one school in the area could close. Yet since, it seems every secondary school within 10 miles of the town centre has closed and been replaced with an emalgamation of 2 or 3 schools to make an academy or whatever they're called this week. Let's hope it's the beginning of a good future. What it needs now is the hundreds of folk that are ripping it to bits of various local websites - WAB/Chronicle etc to return and use the new facilities like the cinema, new restaurants etc, instead of moaning, it will only encourage all the big names back. I've criticised it in the past but now we try and use it as often as possible, our favourite is the meat market, l'll never buy a steak off Ken Morrison again.
I welcome new cinema complex etc as I've seen that new developments can work - as I pointed out Liverpool one has been a massive succesd just think the whole fabric of the town has changed. Not just Barnsley but lots of towns in the North . Don't know what to do with themselves after their industries have been destroyed
I don't think that's actually the problem with Barnsley town centre, I think the big problem is that the council in the 70s (I think) made absolutely terrible decisions in creating a monstrosity of a town centre that was never going to be successful and was never going to last and only now are we attempting to undo 40 years of mistakes. You say you like the old market but be honest it was a horrible building, nothing more than a huge dirty warehouse with a dark multi story carpark on top
Obviously with brexit and consequently thus area losing is biggest Contributor I would say the project was hanging like a thread
They will - not the same though but I also said however ugly the building it can still give you good memories
