Quite upsetting walking round it on Saturday -semi indoor market's last day - old co-op building in ruins. Unrecognisable from the one I remember as a kid - loved the market , spent many an hour in there , always shopped on same stalls for cold meat, bread and fruit. Always had a treat at Sids and the odd go on the round about.
Not just that . Bus and train station gone, library all gone - most of the schools I attended no longer exist. We have to move wth the times but not all change is good ...

I hate the new indoor market that's going up. The town's been waiting all this time for redevelopment and they appear to be building a large mustard coloured cow shed. That's been worth the wait :(

i think it's to$$. absolutely terrible to look at and the $hite on sale is even worse. apart from mebbi bread and sausage rolls, i don't think there's a single thing i'd want to buy from any of those stalls.

It's temporary. Think logically, they have to move the stalls somewhere while the knock down and replace where they are currently housed.

There's actually a really nice stall in the indoor market that sells wooden sculptures and things. Really shouldn't be in the market to be honest, should be up the arcade somewhere

Lots of childhood memories made on this. I share the sentiments in your post Liverpool Red.

OK I'll put it another way. It's only designed to be temporary.

Thank God for that - I don't know anything about the plans, not living in Barnsley itself I haven't taken much notice. Although I suppose its logical, now you mention it, that they have to move somewhere :). I just saw the thing on Saturday and thought what the **** is that!.

ironically, the only time it looks anything like even remotely tempting, is when the continental stalls come. unfortunately, it's also when EDL & UKIP tend to make an appearance

"stop taking our jobs and replacing the $hite we like, with really nice stuff. it's not welcome here"

I can imagine in 20 years time we'll be saying, "was only meant to be temporary that market".

In theory what's happening is that they're pulling the multi story and market down (semi only not the indoor or fish) and in its place building a replacement that will form one side of a new street so the town centre will have the current main street with wh smith and boots on and then behind the market will be another street with more shops on and on top of those shops will be a massive cinema.

The yellow market building is right in the middle of a new town square which will have restaurants (cafes more likely) all way round it and a new library overlooking it. The library is going in place of the shops where I think super drug used to be on the corner

You're right. It's the only time there's anything interesting worth buying, though it still looks a bit scruffy when they're there. If they do complete the plans properly then the German market could be really good in that new town square. I'm not holding my breath though

I know things have to change - Liverpool has gone through a lot of changes but it's improved mainly what was there already. Liverpool One was a billion pound development but still managed to add to the shopping experience. Only had an hour to kill on Saturday but I really struggled

I had my first view of the new market building on Saturday as well and from the Eldon Street looking towards it I saw this sort of shed that put me in mind of this old building from centuries ago

Perhaps the new one is based on the old one (sort of!). Or am I being kind to the designers?

Thanks for that ST. Sounds like it may end up looking OK. Hope so, because the town's got a lot of catching up to do with places like Wakefield I reckon.
