...just about sums a lot of football fans up in this country: "If he was called Alfonso Mawzanovic and we were signing him from Dinamo Zagreb he'd be hailed as a world beater. on here. Alfie from Barnsley just isn't cool... I remember another defender going to a Prem club from Barnsley a couple of years ago, John someone or other, don't think he ended up too shabby." Sign someone with an exotic name for a pittance from the Italian second division and everyone gets behind them as if they're gonna be the next big thing, never works like that. We had that policy under Davey, OK there was a couple that were very good, 10 times more who weren't.
Seems like the Taff versions of HT aren't too keen on his "attributes", gaskets will be blowing in West Yorkshire reading some of that!
Stats like this are completely pointless in football, it's the football manager generation who read too much into them. If he was a cricketer fair enough, but there are too many variables in football (especially for a defender) for passing accuracy or successful tackles to be of any relevance. If that were the case, I could play for a non-league team, never make a tackle, only ever pass back to the keeper, lose 5-0 every week but have amazing stats.
Agreed. I was just surprised by how many of them were so readily taken in by the stats and had made a judgement on that basis. There's only the odd one or two I can think of on here that does that...........
Never been a big thing on here thankfully, obviously if you sign a striker that's scored 3 in 60 that's a different matter, but that's more of a fact than a stat!
Bloody hell, that forum looks like a proper nightmare. I particularly like the 'it's not statistics he's quoting, it's data'. That's true, but only because there's absolutely no context or analysis - it's not a good thing!
Didn't realise their brand of football was winning them the Champions League every year They are **** hot with their stats about us but don't seem to have looked at actual results this year.....yep he's got Welsh cousins
They've succeeded in quouting spurious stats and 'facts' from goodness know what sources to make one of the classiest ball-playing centre halves outside the Premier League sound like Mike Flynn. If they're expecting an injury prone clogger who can't find a five yard pass and sticks it in Row Z at every opportunity they're in for a shock. Oh, and the irony that the Sainted Ashley Williams signed for them as a League Two player with Stockport is totally lost on those unimpressed by his CV.
