That's why I used that example because it shows it to be even more ridiculous. Standing at football is banned for very good reason but many people on here (and throughout the rest of the country) refuse to comply and think it's OK to do so. Wearing a burkini at a beach harms absolutely nobody and has no reason except discrimination to even be a law but people say 'its the law, stick to it'

Of all the threads in the history of the internet, reading a story about men making women take their clothes off, backed up with a measure of legal authority, in a Eurozone country, is to be afforded a glimpse of heaven.

I've seen on a couple of media platforms that this incident may have been partially staged, in as much as the woman apparently was observed sitting on the beach looking around for ages, rather than simply relaxing, as if waiting for someone to approach. Also, the camera man who captured the photos apparently took up his position at the same time the woman entered the beach, remaining positioned until the the police showed up. Now none of this is fact, it could be ******** or a coincidence. Nor does it change the debate or anything, but it does show that things aren't always as they appear to be. Just thought it was interesting. Reported in the Guardian anyway.

I'm not aware of the finer points of the law, but it seems to be clear that the French believed a law was being broken and under the circumstances, taking into account recent events, I can forgive them being a little over zealous in their manner.

No I wouldn't but my point is that I'd respect the laws in any country including Islamic countries whose laws are far more draconian than in France. I think the French have been over zealous on this occasion but I can understand it even if I don't agree.

It is a law that they brought in deliberately (and admittedly) to target muslims and to criminalise the following of Muslim customs. How can that be right?

 

A more direct parallel is a Western woman walking around Saudi without covering her head. Let's see how far she gets! If you live in a foreign country you should respect their rules and don't expect them to accomodate you in every aspect of your former lifestyle. Too many traditions hide behind the 'religious beliefs' excuse.

Tolerance is fine but it should be a two way street and that is where the prejudice comes in. Muslims in particular expect tolerance but are less tolerant towards others. Westerners experience far worse in places like Saudi and even the UAE when it comes to intolerance. Witness the guy recently arrested for tweeting a charity to collect blankets for aid for Iraq as he did not have permission from the Dubai Government to raise funds for charity.

 

A more direct and accurate parallel is living and enjoying life in Turkey when suddenly next week they issue a law forcing all women to wear burka. There is a huge difference between choosing to move to a country where a law exists and having a new discriminatory law thrust upon you when you already live in a country

 

Get a grip Jamdrop. Police patrol in pairs on the streets of London. They don't necessarily "NEED" to have two for most situations but that is how they work. France and many places are on high alert particularly in locations with soft targets like beaches with tourists. Anyone with clothing that might conceal arms or explosives are bound to arouse suspicion regardless of whether it is a burka/burkini/ loose fitting robe. That is why the rule was brought in in the first place. Many police in high alert situations are armed and work in teams. These people know the law and are actively flouting it.

Saying that "they felt the need to have four armed men" is unsubstantiated

 

No it isn't why the rule was brought in. The rule was brought in to target Muslims, the mayor admitted such. That is why the law clearly states religion

Wasn't being arsey in any way MK I was genuinely curious. Might lure the mother in law onto he beach wearing a headscarf next time I'm over see what happens.

 

Maybe you're just harder than me. Though the 4 hours I spent in a small room with 6 Vietnamese Policemen looking like they might go off the hook at any minute dis I didn't want to bribe em to go into Laos probably has summat to do with my aversion to coppers with guns. If i had been that woman in that situation I would have felt scared and intimidated and even more so if the police had been armed. To me as an individual it seems a relevant point.

 

But she's allowed to wear it elsewhere just not on the beach. There's also a backpack amongst the people next to her, surely that would be easier to conceal something in?

 

I'm just trying to imagine now what it would be like having four men with guns around me (whether pointing at me or not) telling me I had to take off some of my clothes. I get that rules are rules and she shouldn't be breaking them but the point of this thread was to comment on how ridiculous that law is in the first place.

 

Once Turkey has finished assisting/wiping out the kurds in the battle with Isis itll get declared there.

That's not the reason at all .
The wearing of a Burkha is nothing to do with the Quran nor it's teachings ,it's a cultural decision by some regions in Islamic countries/ Regions.
There are fair and warranted arguments to ban the wearing of this garment especially in non Islamic or secular countries ,
The Burkini is not a full face covering garment it is a costume for covering the whole of the body apart from the face. In no way does it enhances the concealment of the sex of the wearer nor the fact she may have a great suicide vest underneath ,anymore than someone of Western values etc deciding to swim,/supervise children on a beach fully clothed . it's discriminatory in it purest form.
As far as laws are concerned it was illegal in America/ S,Africa for different races to mingle , do you consider those that refused to abide criminal ?

 

Nothing to do with who's harder than who, our scenarios are completely different.
