32 league games 3 goals, so how much is Alfie Mawson worth?

Can we stop doing this. This is not how football works.

We set a price we think represents the current price for a championship defender with limited experience and do not consider anything less. It's not difficult.

We're attempting to hang on to or sell a person, with all the messy emotional baggage such a transaction comes with. I think you underestimate it by claiming it's not difficult. To be honest, the more I think about it, the more I'm of the opinion that the football transfer market can't possibly be legal and I'm surprised it hasn't been challenged in a court of law. It's certainly morally questionable. Compensation set at a fixed rate depending on the length and value of a player's contract I understand, but a club having the power to stop the freedom of movement and openly trading people for vast sums of money is just bizarre.

It's almost certainly illegal there's a couple of interesting court cases pending in Europe questioning its legality which seem destined ( in the long run) to end the transfer of players n the way we know it now.

I'm not sure exactly which aspects are being debated, but surely any further changes which hand greater leverage to the players and agents is likely to spell disaster for most clubs outside the Premier League?

He's worth as much as a club is willing to pay for him

I don't care what leeds do, want or get. Alfie is worth 5m for me. To consider how much a like for like replacement will cost, the years left on his current deal, the age he's at, the goals he contributes as a defender and the time it will take to integrate his replacement all adds up for me. For me the club could offer him a new deal right now with a bigger pay packet but have it written into a new deal that should a club higher up the pyramid offer a certain amount, then Alfie is free to talk but add an extra year or 2 onto his current deal. Football doesn't always work like this but a young John stones did this

Am I right in thinking Taylor's a couple of years younger, has more championship experience & that wingers tend to go for more money than centre backs? If so, why's anyone surprised Taylor's value appears to be higher?

    I agree.

It has absolutely nothing to d with what Leeds are valuing their players at, is the point I'm making.

Posts are made daily starting with "(Football Teams Name) are asking for £X million for (Footballers name), what is (Barnsley player) worth". Footballers values aren't based on the value of other players at other clubs. This is how we get people saying Aidy White is worth £40m because Jonny Evans is worth £25m, which of course is ludicrous.

He's a full back, and not a great one at that.

There's a case going through that would basically end all transfer fees other than compensation for contract breaches. The transfer system is an anachronism in the modern world but at the same time you are right about the impact on small clubs.

I suspect it's going to lead to clubs signing players on very long contracts, and to signing-on fees going through the roof. Whilst I agree that in some ways the transfer system is an anachronism, it's also the life blood for many teams. If it collapsed completely, it would be another nail in the coffin for the English pyramid as it exists now.
