Just thought it's about time I posted something that some might perceive as controversial.
I am absolutely fed up of anybody and his dog, media pundits, breakfast TV presenters, Fred Bloggs with his big beer belly down Athersley and Hymer Suddenolympicsfan from Dodeth suddenly bigging up the word 'we' in relation to the GB Olympic effort.
There's nothing 'we' about it. The athletes represent the country and try really hard to do well. In many cases they have done well. But that's where it ends. 'We' have as a country had little interest in the Olympians whatsoever. 'We' would probably not have been able to name more than two or three of the GB team until they were plastered on the screen for us. 'We' don't watch Olympic sports generally and have do not attend events in order to claim some kind of empathy with the sportsmen/women. In other words, 'We' are simply using the Olympics as a sop to satiate our attitude about ourselves because we are in need of some solace about ourselves. 'We' will have forgotten all about the Olympics in two or three weeks and nobody will bat an eyelid. In a year or two when the latest drugs and misconduct info comes out about Olympian sportspeople 'we' will be disgusted and shocked.

I have done nothing to support the Olympians. I never have. While it is good to see great athletes do well, it really is nothing to do with me and it's nothing to do with 'we'.

There ya go...but when you slag me off don't say 'we' to me - it's like the knights who say 'ni' at the moment.

And it was about 'me' potentially winning 10 million rather than anything to do with the Olympics!

    Then you can say "we"
Money goes to train and sustain Olympians.

So what I can grasp from that article is he doesn't like the BBC, he doesn't want us to win any medals because its not fair on people who dont have the same facilities and that Britain is becoming some sort of 1970's Soviet Union lookalike because we have had a good Olympics, seriously some people are mental why can't we be proud of people who represent us as a nation. Do you honestly think the German media crucified the World cup winning team in 2014 because it wasn't fair because England were crap or because Honduras couldn't afford the same gym equipment.

Back to the OP's original post yes I do say "we" when I refer to the GB squad but that's because they represent me just like Barnsley represent me, I've contributed very little if nothing to either over the years but they still represent where I come from and who I support so yes I do refer to them as "we"

Sorry if this was long and made no sense I just had a little ramble

    1. The BBC is sometimes biased and unreflective of a variety of different views (however, I didn't mention the BBC per se)
    2. I do want ANY good competitors to win medals, contrary to the 'us' you seem to suggest
    3. The Olympics is not fair on many different levels (Economics, financing, government involvement, corruption etc.. etc...)
    4. To suggest/imply I am mental simply because I have a point of view is disgraceful and you should be ashamed of yourself for implying it.

As to one of your other points about representation, I have no problem with that. The athletes/competitors I am of no doubt will be proud to represent the country. My gripe is simply at the people who latch on to that success and, although they have had no genuine input/given no real support/had no real interest suddenly say 'hey, aren't we great?'. No, ... the competitors are great, and their desire and hard work is great. All athletes and competitors who do well at big events like the olympics merit respect.
And, the comment about football is not the same to be honest... a) the German media are not going to criticise a successful team just as our media won't. Our media shouldn't be criticising a successful competitor at the Olympics. so I don't see your point there. As for the comment about Honduras I don't really know what you are trying to say..

Perhaps in some ways I am saying that the people who win the gold medals aren't really being represented by the people back home unless they do well.

Don't be rude, don't suggest stupid things by innuendo, make a valid point. Otherwise you do yourself a disservice. If you can't do that then you are indeed sniffing the wrong tackle

Different kettle of fish... Barnsley fans are invested in the club and they buy tickets, sing, groan and ultimately have a vested interest......The club really does represent them and vice versa. 'We' in the case of Barnsley are a community, hence the existence, for example, of this very board

There are a lot of things that I don't like about Americans, but their pride in their athletes and their country is admirable. I think for the most part people here are proud of our athletes and the example they have set, and are rightly proud of what our country has achieved. Our investment in sport is something to be commended, and aspiring to be the best in the world at something isn't a character flaw. Inspiring kids and extolling the virtues of hard work, dedication and desire, what fault could anybody possibly find with that?
