Let's be honest, Barnsley's summer and pre-season has been utterly shambolic. Fair enough the squad needed a major overhaul but the business the club has done has been very disappointing. The promise of signing 15-20 players from Mansford was laughable; the club signed no-one and then went to Italy with a load of kids, with Wilson telling us it will be crucial to get the players out of the spotlight so they can gel and blend and work out systems etc. Ridiculous. They didn't even have a team at that stage! It was a jolly, spending the season ticket money they'd got in. The games they played were a waste of time, chasing shadows against a Serie A team... Then Danny gets a team of cast offs together in the fortnight before the season starts... Luke Berry - a good season in the Conference fair enough but this is League One, a big step up and a physical league. He's small, lightweight and easily knocked off the ball. Hourihane looks a decent player, but is still quite slight, not exactly the kind of ball winner we need. Bailey - a misfit from Derby, with a lot to prove; has played very little football recently and is again quite small. Might come good but no guarantees. Turnbull - experienced and undoubted quality...but released by Donny, our rivals in League One. Do they know something we don't? Hasn't played a game yet due to...injury. Davies - young kid who hasn't played a game before; has to start due to Turnbull's injury. Prone to errors in pre-season. Hemmings - only given a one year contract due to injury problems; hasn't figured in pre-season due to...injury. Treacy - Burnley fans seem to think he's only decent when he can be bothered and quite often...he can't be bothered; went home to Ireland for a nice long rest and few pints of the black stuff instead of getting his arse in gear and getting a new club and hasn't had a proper pre-season, so isn't fit yet. Winnall - goals in League Two, but Scunny fans not too upset to lose him. Jury out, might come good. Brown - perhaps one of the better ones from showings so far... Solid enough. Dudgeon - one month desperation loan because first choice teenager breaks his toe. Lita - let's hope he turns out to be the answer to all our prayers because so far I am far from impressed! League One is a tough, physical league and a squad of young kids with very little experience, who are mostly small and lightweight will struggle to compete against the likes of Sheff Utd, MK Dons, Leyton Orient, Bristol City etc...oh and Crawley Town apparently. Maybe I'm a cynical, negative old git but I just can't see Barnsley challenging anywhere near the top of this division. Unless Leroy can do some magic. Hope springs eternal...
Regarding Sam Winnall, i have been told, from someone in the know at Scunny, that Winnall was actually going to be Scunny's THIRD choice striker behind Paddy Madden and Deon Chuffing Burton!
Agree with most of that, except Turnbull wasn't released by Donny as he turned down their offer of a new contact. Also, I was quite impressed with Hourihane so I do have high hopes for him. Prepare to be shot down by the reight fans though...
Are you sure you don't have an agenda against Wilson Woodbine? To be honest, apart from the Turnbull thing which Conan pointed out, you are bang on.
I've had it on good authority that Jim O'Brien went to Coventry on lower wages than we were offering... That lad clearly saw them as a better bet than us.
I'm just relieved I didn't get a season ticket. Will pick and choose my games very carefully with maybe the odd away trip to new grounds. I just think the fans deserve better; at least a team that's ready for the first game and not a bunch of strangers who might gel by Christmas...
One game, one ninety minute game. All that's needed to write off the lot of em. Close it darn, Pat. Tell Rimmo to turn out the lights.
Pre-season was a joke, which is why we need to give this team a few games before passing judgement. None of our 3 highest profile signings started on Saturday (Turnbull, Treacy, Lita). We were narrowly defeated with only 10 men. Get a grip.
That's exactly how i feel. Went on Saturday with it being the opening game, but after enduring that i won't be going for a good few matches yet until they have "Gelled" if they ever do! Hopefully they do sooner rather than later!
Spoke to Steele after Halifax match so know for a fact that isn't true. As Whitey says, mayswell just back it in now.
All laughable... Winnall a third choice striker who was top scorer I the league??? Next you will want us to bring back Wisemen, Kennedy, Perkins, Dawson, Mellis, and the rest of the dross that got us relegated... Ben & Danny needed to clear the decks and did..replace quantity with quality
